Luke 2 In those days…
Luke 2 is probably one of the more famous scriptures, especially after the recent Christmas season. Angels and shepherds, Mary and her baby, Jesus. “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!’ (2:14). I pray that the meaning of Christ's birth touched your hearts during the Christmas season and continues to fill you!
- Let’s look past the birth of Jesus, and we will see a few stories that we do not usually read. For instance, Simeon and Anna are righteous people (both a man and a woman!) who prophesied about Jesus. It was only the Holy Spirit that made Simeon understand that Jesus was the Messiah. The outward appearance of Jesus was simply an 8 day old baby boy. Do we pray that we will see with the eyes of the Holy Spirit in order to witness God’s work in the world?
- Fast forward twelve years between verse 40 and verse 41. What was Jesus like as a child? We do not know. We do know that parenting Jesus must have been quite similar to parenting any child. From what I see of parents raising children, raising children is hard work! Parenting is holy work. Like Mary raised Jesus in order that he “… became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him,” so to with parenting today. When God became Jesus, human flesh intertwined with the Divine. We have the opportunity as parents, friends, aunts, uncles, grandparents, teachers or others who care about children to see the work of raising children as a sacred call from God.
